Choosing a first baby blanket can feel overwhelming, but two fabrics keep rising to the top: muslin and crepe. Both are lightweight and breathable — the real question is which one fits your routine. Understanding how they differ makes the choice simple.

Look closely and the two are easy to tell apart. Muslin has a smooth, flat, open plain weave; it feels crisp at first and grows softer with every wash. Crepe, in contrast, is covered in delicate crinkles, created by twisting yarns tightly before weaving. The textured surface feels springy and airy, and it never looks wrinkled no matter how much it is packed and unpacked.

Think about how you will use it. Muslin's generous size and smooth drape make it a wonderful all-rounder: a swaddle at night, a tummy-time mat by day, a burp cloth in between. Crepe's featherlight hand shines on warm days and during travel, folding into almost nothing in a diaper bag while still providing gentle coverage and shade. As for seasons, muslin suits mild weather and year-round versatility, while crepe is especially lovely when temperatures climb.

Either choice rewards gentle care — machine wash in cold or warm water and air dry or tumble low, and both fabrics will stay soft and true. Whichever you pick, look for plain, unlabeled fabrics in soft neutral tones with neatly finished edges. Size matters, too: look for generously cut squares that keep their shape through swaddling, tummy time, and years of snuggles. Many parents simply keep two on rotation — one in the wash, one in the diaper bag — and find that muslin and crepe quietly complement each other across every season.

The poet Carl Sandburg wrote, "A baby is God's opinion that life should go on." However you wrap that new life — smooth muslin or rippled crepe — choose comfort, breathability, and safety first.
